Sloane's Supercharged 1994 SVT Cobra

My older brother, Sloane, has also been bitten by the Mustang bug.  This latest toy, a Black 1994 SVT Cobra, has proven to be his most fun toy yet.....

Sloane's first Mustang was the same 1984 V6 that my first experience was with.  After selling it to me, he bought a beautiful 1991 LX, which served him well for several years, until it was stolen while he slept in Pembroke Pines, FL.  At the time, the car was equipped with a Vortech A-Trim, Ported and O-Ringed Edelbrock aluminum cylinder heads, and Edelbrock intake, 65mm throttle body, 75mm Bullet MAF, 3.55 gears, full exhaust, an impressive sound system, and much more.  When the 1991 was found, there was little left aside of a shell, but later on the motor and trans turned up, with some other parts, on another car that the police impounded.  Sloane was able to retrieve many parts, but not the blower.

The 1994 now sports a heavy-duty S-Trim, with the Race bearings, so it is ready for a T-Trim upgrade at any time.  The car also sports the original Edelbrock aluminum heads from the 1991, a full MSD ignition and boost retard, and a Steeda shifter.  Soon the car will receive a full fuel system compliment, which will include larger injectors (probably something in the 36lb range) a better MAF, and a custom chip.

Sloane's interest in Mustangs for some time lay solely in street duty and drag racing.  But recently, I was able to show him the light.  I brought Sloane out with me to SAAC-MCR open track event at Waterford Hills Race Track, and I showed him the light.  Suddenly Sloane got a chance to appreciate the finer points of driving: corner and braking, as well as brute acceleration.  After two events this year, Sloane was able to get his time down into the consistent 1:25s on the 1.5 mile course, an outstanding time considering the car's street tires and bone stock suspension and brake system.  He did an excellent job of harnessing the 350+ horsepower his pony is putting out.

The 1994 Cobra was the cornerstone of Ford's Special Vehicle Team's 1994 line-up, which at the time also consisted of the 1994 SVT Lightning.  The Cobra sported an improved 5.0L High Output engine compared to the GT, but the highlights of the Cobra were it's handling and chassis dynamics.  The Cobra, right from the factory, sported a suspension tuned with much improved springs, and stiffer shocks and struts.  The Cobra also had stiffer sway bars, creating an excellent handling car that just begged to be driven hard.

With massive 13" rotors and twin piston PBR calipers in front, and an 11.65" rotor with Varga calipers in back, the cars braking were elevated to a level previously unknown to Mustang owners.  This braking set-up was carried over from the 1993 Cobra R, a car that was purpose built for the race track, and it showed.  Despite the hard use that comes from repeatedly slowing a car that makes that much horsepower, the brakes performed admirably.  Sloane's plans for the car include a race seat and harnesses, a more capable fuel system, and possibly a set of race tires.  Then, with some more experience, he'll have a car that is extremely capable for South East Michigan's open track scene.  Below are a few more pictures of Sloane at Waterford, taken 10/99.
