Front
Suspension
The front suspension on my car is a collection of big-buck parts, which
were put together and are to this day the subject of constant tuning and
tweaking.
The basis of the suspension starts with a Grigg's tubular K-member and
Grigg's A-Arms. Together, these units take significant steps toward
correcting the geometry problems inherent in the Mustang's penny-pinching
McPherson strut suspension. The arms work in conjunction with Tokico
adjustable struts, SN-95 spindles and a coil-over spring set-up. The
spindles allow me to use the newer and much stronger 5-lug hubs, brakes, and
wheels while the coil-over set-up reduces the weight of the spring and gives full adjustability over
the ride height of the vehicle. The total weight savings with the
Grigg's components is in the area of 70lbs, right where the Mustang needs
it most: in the front end!!
The Grigg's in front succeeded in eliminating the inherent push of
the nose-heavy Mustang. Not just due to the weight reduction, but primarily
due to the improved bump-steer, ackerman, and anti-dive. The car
now has a very sharp and predictable turn-in, and a tremendous amount of
mid-corner and corner-exit front grip.
Trained eyes
will notice some other parts in these two pictures. Among them are
the Grigg's adjustable bumpsteer kit, long tube headers, a solid steering
joint replacing the stock rag joint, stainless steel brake lines, and Cobra
PBR calipers. Note that since this picture was taken, there have
been many changes, including new Brembo calipers, 1996+ SN-95 spindles,
and a custom brake cooling set up.
Wheel & tire clearance in front became a large issue when switching
to the Brembos. The front fender lips are rolled, smoothed, and stretched
quite a bit. The front fender extensions have also been pushed out
quite a bit toward the rear, to give the front corner of the tire clearance
during turns. Also note that the wheel liner has been cut out for
clearance. So far no steering limiters have been needed, but since
it is a track car, I should never have the wheel turned that far anyway!!
