Engine & Drivetrain

The new 351 Windsor  (2000-present)

The current motor is a high compression 351ci. Windsor based from a 1993 Lightning block, and was built by L&B Engines, in Wilkes Barre, PA.  Most of the internals, including crank and rods are 1995 Cobra R spec, while the pistons are domed, SRP forgings yielding over a 12:1 compression ratio.  Topped with Edelbrock heads and TFS intake, 75mm Accufab throttle body, and Anderson Ford Motorsport Hi-Volume Power Pipe, the combination yields about 400hp at the tires, or well over 450hp at the crankshaft.

The exhaust system is a custom system made up of MAC 1 3/4" primary headers, Dr. Gas 3" X-Pipe, and Flowmaster 3" mufflers.  The system dumps the exhaust just in front of the rear axle, leaving plenty of room for the rear suspension to work it's magic.

Electronic engine management is done using a custom chip programmed by Mike Wesley of C & M Racing - the maker of ChipMaster Software and the Calibrator.  The computer was set-up to run open loop only, therefore eliminating the need for Oxygen sensors.  This mode of operation also allowed me have all the emissions equipment "programmed out", so that engine could run well without them.  The computer runs based only on five basic sensors: ACT, ECT, MAF, BAP, and TPS. (For you novices, that's: Air Charge Temp, Engine Coolant Temp, Mass Air Flow, Barometric Absolute Pressure, and Throttle Position Sensor)

The accessories on the motor are mostly stock.  The waterpump is a Stewart piece, but both the alternator and PS pump are purely stock.

The Old 5.0  (1988-1999)

The previous drivetrain was built around a stock short block out of a '93 Mustang 5.0L.  As much as I would love to put in lighter, higher compression pistons, and have it balanced and blueprinted, it was just out of my budget.

The heads were Ford Motorsport GT-40 Irons, that were ported and polished by Peter Turek of Bridgeport, CT.  The induction system was comprised of a ported and polished Cobra intake, a 65mm throttle body, a Ford Motorsport MAF calibrated for 30lb. injectors, and a stock-style K&N air filter in the stock airbox (silencer removed of course).

On the exhaust end of things, the heads dumped into a set of 1 5/8" MAC Long Tube Headers, through a 2 1/2" H-Pipe, and into 2 Dynomax mufflers, which had dumps on them.  There were no tailpipes on the car, and there still aren't!

The 302 was controlled electronically just like the new 351 is.  See above for details.

In this picture, you can also see the older Griffin radiator, the MSD 6AL and Caster/Camber plates.

Note that the engine bay in general has been one target of the vehicle-wide weight savings program.  The A/C has been completely removed, along with all associated lines and hoses.  All emissions equipment, including EGR, has also been removed.  The few vacuum lines that were still needed (most are emissions related in some way) were re-routed more cleanly.
